Everything you need to know about the new Bing image search

Google Farrah

Bing just updated their image search page, upgrading to a beautiful menu with intuitive buttons to further filter search results.  It’s a stunning interface, far superior to Google.  To test it out, I thought of the one of the most iconic pictures I could imagine.  Farrah Fawcett’s swimsuit poster.   Should be a slam dunk, right?

Google Images delivers exactly what I expected for “Farrah Fawcett”:

Bing Images returns this:

In fact, the iconic Farrah Fawcett swimshot shot returned in the 196th position on Bing.  And that’s all you need to know about new image search (or anything for that matter) on Bing.  All of the ancillary bells and whistles temporarily mask the elephant in the room: their search algorithm is shockingly poor.

I aspire to give people something to think about rather than tell them what to do. My favorite Google Alert is “social media research,” I am increasingly compelled by Gen Z, and I appreciate good writers agnostic of where they write. At one time I was Kred’s 12th most influential social media blogger and Klout’s most influential person on the topic of David Hasselhoff. Transplant from Seattle living in Cincinnati. Haven’t entirely adopted the local sports teams yet.

Seems a bit steep to draw conclusions based on one search for one image?

You’re absolutely right – it’s completely unscientific. I do use Bing from time-to-time to draw contrast from Google and for whatever reason there is a decided gap in relevance between the two. It’s almost comical how detailed you have to be to get what you specifically want on Bing, and their social integration into results made it even more convoluted. But you’re absolutely correct about it not being statistically relevant, even unfair. That said, I can’t tell you how upset I was counting 196 pictures to get to the most popular and recognizable one. Thanks again so much for reading and for commenting Martijn!
