How to edit your comments on Facebook (and why they’ll still haunt you)

Editing a Facebook Post

One of the more frustrating features of Facebook (for my fat fingers) was the fact that you couldn’t edit a post or comment without deleting and retyping it.  For someone as prone to misspellings and grammatical errors as I am, not being able to edit my posts is at times a little frustrating.

Facebook just added a feature that allows for you to edit your posts and comments (with a caveat).  For longer conversations this is helpful to keep the context of the conversation, and for those people wanting to put their best grammatical foot forward it’s helpful to be able to do some wordsmithing when you want to.

For any of your posts, in the upper right-hand corner there is a pencil.  By clicking said pencil you can edit or delete your content.  By choosing edit, you go right back into your post – its hurried, clumsy idioms ripe for refinement.

Once you’ve reposted your edited content you’ll see at the bottom of the post the phrase “edited.”  Anyone can see the post that was edited, and by clicking can see the original post – so an edit doesn’t entirely admonish you from your previous writing.  That said, I can’t imagine most people will take the time to investigate everything you’ve edited.

The conversations on Facebook won’t get any smarter because of this editing feature, but at the very least maybe a few more people will realize that they’ve inappropriately used “your” instead of “you’re” and correct it.  By that standard, Facebook may have become a slightly better place to be.

I aspire to give people something to think about rather than tell them what to do. My favorite Google Alert is “social media research,” I am increasingly compelled by Gen Z, and I appreciate good writers agnostic of where they write. At one time I was Kred’s 12th most influential social media blogger and Klout’s most influential person on the topic of David Hasselhoff. Transplant from Seattle living in Cincinnati. Haven’t entirely adopted the local sports teams yet.

Yup love this feature. I noticed only yesterday! Cool thing is that I can also go back to previous edits.

Thanks Jane! I’m loving it, too…. though I already may have used it more than anyone in the history of Facebook!
