I had a great chat with Randy Bowden last night on his marketer2marketer program (you can check it out here). One of the topics that Randy touched on was online privacy and how it might affect social media usage for the future. I mentioned the Universal McCann Wave6 study as an example of how people are somewhat apathetic about their privacy, but I failed to mention that people’s apathy may stem from the fact that they don’t fully understand the extent that their data is collected.
Fortunately, this infographic doesn’t sugar coat the privacy issues surrounding any of these platforms. I had an “a-ha” moment when I saw this realizing that even if people self-report a thorough understanding of all of the data collected on them, they most likely don’t understand the extent of the data collection completely. It’s pretty impressive and troubling.
Let me know what you think about the characterization of these companies or of digital privacy in general.
